‘gypsy’ Show Takes Away The Mystery

With most Avengers titles currently gearing up for Infinity, it's all the more refreshing to have a book like Uncanny Avengers that is allowed to do its own thing completely independent from the rest of the Marvel Universe. But that hardly means Rick Remender is quietly sitting in a corner and letting everyone else play with the big boy toys.

Liberator #1, written by Matt Miner, with art by Javier Sanchez Aranda, attempts to trade in superhero genre tropes while telling a story firmly grounded in the fabric of the real world. While the book is devoid and tights and capes, it does feature a (ski) masked vigilante, Damon, who positions himself as a sort of Batman for dogs.

In Batman and Robin (or Batgirl) #21, Bruce Wayne continues to move through the five stages of grief following the death of his son and Robin, Damian Wayne. This month, we’re on bargaining, and who better to counsel (or attempt to counsel) Bruce through this stage than the ever reasonable Barbara Gordon.

As a fictional character, Harry Houdini has been experiencing something a renaissance lately. Given the sudden burst in interest in the figure of Houdini, it’s refreshing to see that writer Jeremy Holt and artist Kevin Ziegler’s mini-series - After Houdini #1 - chooses a slightly less obvious path. The book elevates Houdini from the level of illusionist to the top secret government agent, and then takes that formula – an interesting premise in its own right – one step further by shifting the focus to his son, Josef.
