The toll of the opioid crisis is all too easily obscured by its overwhelming numbers: Overdose deaths reached record highs in 2022, killing roughly 115,000 people in the U.S. and Canada. The unprecedented spike is largely due to the prevalence of fentanyl, a powerful synthetic opioid that can be 50 times stronger than heroin and 100 times stronger than morphine.
