A’s Sam Fuld sizzles as replacement in leadoff spot Entering Friday, the A’s leader in slugging percentage was, would you believe, Sam Fuld — he of the small stature and the great defensive reputation. Fuld, waived by the A’s a year ago Monday before being reacquired from the Twins for Tommy Milone later in the summer, has a .639 slugging percentage through his first nine games — putting him in the top 10 in the league. “It’s probably the best opportunity he’s had to lead off on a consistent basis, and he’s running with it,” manager Bob Melvin said. Fuld has five multi-hit games, and he’s tripled three times, tied for the major-league lead. Typically, the A’s use two right-handed set-up men, and he’s trying to figure out who to will join Dan Otero. Evan Scribner, who has spent the past three seasons bouncing between the A’s and Triple-A, is a leading candidate, largely because he has struck out eight and walked only one in his 72/3 innings so far.
