When she finally got well enough to make a movie, she had the bright idea to cast a career criminal in one of the lead roles. For the first 20 minutes, “Abuse of Weakness” looks like it might turn out to be the best film Breillat ever made — and the best showcase for Huppert since “The Piano Teacher.” The stroke and recovery scenes are a perfect meeting of Breillat’s fascination for the physical and the grotesque and Huppert’s naked courage. The scenes of Maud in the hospital, her face distorted and mouth drooling, are as intense as anything in Michael Haneke’s “Amour.” Unfortunately, the rest of the movie collapses into boredom, becoming a series of scenes in which the crook asks for an advance on his salary and Maud writes a check. Abusing a stroke victim by conning her out of money may not be a nice thing, but it's not a particularly dramatic kind of abuse.
