All Fiction Is Fantasy, Chabon Says

By Amy Raymond, Staff WriterSHAWNEE — Michael Chabon isn’t “the least bit interested in genre distinctions.” He even goes so far as to describe “genre ghettos” in which good books get sorted and catalogued by distinctions that often become stand-ins for the idea of “good fiction” (aka literature) and everything else (sci-fi, Western, chick lit, etc.). So, to discuss the value of fantasy literature during a visit to Oklahoma Thursday for the Pioneer Library System, he began by describing himself as “genre fluid.” It’s a pretty fitting description for his work, and apparently, his reading tastes. The distinctions have perhaps done the fantasy genre the greatest disservice of all. They’ve taught us that we only like certain things.Read more on NewsOK.com
