American Flag Football League kicks off in San Jose in June Flag football is turning pro and San Jose will serve as the launch site for its first professional game. The American Flag Football League will host its inaugural game at Avaya Stadium at 6:30 p.m. June 27. Regular league play is scheduled to begin in 2018. With ex-NFL players Michael Vick and Justin Forsett scheduled to participate, AFFL founder Jeff Lewis believes his league will succeed. “We think that sports and entertainment works when it achieves three different elements,” Lewis said, Affinity, urgency and quality. Lewis got the idea for the league in 2014 when he watched his son play flag football in New York. “It’s pretty rough watching little kids play softball or soccer or basketball because there’s really nothing going on,” he said. [...] I started to wonder what it would look like played by grown-ups, by world-class grown-ups. Neither the locations of those franchises nor a pay structure for players has been established. The actual flags won’t be those old Velcro ditties; instead the AFFL will employ e-flags that yield real-time data for on-field player movements and flag-status.
