Ended up on imdb trivia recently. Link: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0317705/trivia?ref_=tt_trv_trv "Helen got the jet from Snug, her old sidekick and pilot when she was Elastigirl. Originally, Snug would have also flown the plane and gotten killed when it was shot down, thus raising the stakes for the characters. The animators convinced Brad Bird to have Helen fly the plane herself, rather than spending money on a minor character for only a few minutes of screen time. The shot of Helen watching the destroyed plane sink into the ocean was apparently filmed when the script still called for Snug's death, explaining her overlong look as the wreckage sinks because, as filmed, it contained the corpse of her friend." I swear, this was the version I watched in theaters. Having to watch a mother make eye contact with an old friend, one last time, only to look at her with eyes that say 'save the kids' is one of those 'Pixar did it again moments' that you don't easily shake. However, this scene must have been altered for DVD release and is not included in any deleted scenes or special features. It's been changed (perhaps for the better) to show a much more prominent Helen saving the lives of her children. Both are powerful scenes, for their own merits, but I'm struck by the fact that I cannot find any evidence other than this line from imdb of what I know I watched in theaters.
