By Tim Willert, Staff Writer ∙ email@example.comOklahoma City Public Schools is moving forward with an alternative to Land Run re-enactments considered culturally insensitive and dishonest by some American Indian parents and students.
District officials said they recently discontinued the re-enactments — which had dropped off in recent years — because they don’t tell the whole story behind the 1889 rush to acquire unassigned lands originally set aside for Indian tribes.
“It is not only a good idea to discontinue the Land Run re-enactments but it is the right thing to do,” said Star Yellowfish, the district’s administrator for American Indian student services.
By Andrew Knittle, Staff WriterNORMAN — Thousands of people drive by the sprawling building every day.
Owned by the Cleveland County Health Department, the modern-looking building in east Norman is used to treat some of the most vulnerable, at-risk individuals in the area.
Most of those who pass by are unaware as to why the building is there to begin with.
Still fewer know it’s named for Cal Hobson, the former state senator who was arrested twice in 2014 after police suspected him of driving while under the influence of alcohol.
By Jennifer Palmer, Staff WriterTECUMSEH — For their project to replace a row of trees planted after the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing, Tecumseh Middle School students are aiming for an A+.
The symbolic trees, planted as a memorial after the devastating attack, inadvertently were cut down this fall during the installation of a new digital sign at the school, just south of State Highway 9 in Tecumseh.
There was no marker for the trees, so the current school administration wasn’t aware of the significance, said Todd Trice, a teacher at the school and student council sponsor.
“The kids here heard about it, and there was a move to replace the trees, and it kind of snowballed,” he said.
Led by the school’s student council, the students have designed a beautiful new memorial for the front of the school — and they’re receiving support from architects Hans and Torrey Butzer, who designed the Oklahoma City National Memorial.
Students designed the new memorial to include two trees — seedlings from the original Survivor Tree, one representing the past, one the future — with benches in between symbolizing the present.
