To be fair, it took tens of thousands of years of droplets of water on marble bedrock to create some of the spectacular formations all around us, so keeping hands, phones and purses off these delicate creations makes sense. Beyond impressive stalactites (hanging from the ceiling) and stalagmites (growing from the ground), Black Chasm Cavern also boasts thin tubes known as “soda straws”; rippling flowstones in arrays called “draperies,” “angel’s wings” and “cave bacon,” among other shapes; and the exceedingly rare helictites. Found in only 5 percent of the world’s caves, these curving, spiraling filaments and prongs come in fanciful shapes that at Black Chasm suggest everything from a bad hair day to coral, candy canes and even a tiny dragon. With a light jacket, the cavern’s year-round temperature of 54 to 57 degrees feels pleasant anytime, but winter and spring are ideal times to visit the cavern, because tour sizes are likely to be smaller. [...] the greater likelihood of rain increases the chance of feeling “cave kisses,” the seeping droplets of water that continue to sculpt this underground masterpiece. After ascending back to the visitor center suitably kissed, and with my phone, purse and dignity intact, I discovered a hidden treasure above ground: the Zen Garden Nature Trail. A 1-mile walk that starts near Black Chasm’s hilltop visitor center, the trail dips down through an evergreen forest to a grove of mossy blue marble pillars, arches and passageways. While soiled water flooded valleys and stream, eventually leading to a ban on the practice, massive veins of marble emerged, forming a natural labyrinth. Walking the nature trail is considerably less daunting than the Black Chasm Cavern Tour, which is “not recommended for people with heart conditions, claustrophobia or a fear of heights,” according to the online warning I read only after the fact.
