BOSTON — Former Boston Mayor Thomas Menino cast an absentee ballot shortly before his death Thursday, but it won’t count under state law.
Menino, 71, died five days before the Nov. 4 general election. He will lie in state at the city’s historic Faneuil Hall on Sunday and he will have a private burial Monday in his Hyde Park neighborhood.
Menino spokeswoman Dot Joyce confirmed Friday that he cast the mail ballot but declined to provide further details, adding that voting and elections were important to the city’s longest serving mayor.
Chapter 54, Section 100 of the state General Laws says that a mail ballot cannot be counted if election officers know the voter died before polls open on Election Day.
A spokeswoman for Mayor Martin Walsh’s office confirmed the ballot has already been excluded.
Absentee ballots are cast by those unable to go to polling locations on Election Day, either because they will be out of town, have a physical disability or their religious beliefs prevent them for going to the polls.
NEWPORT, N. H. — Republican U. S. Senate hopeful Scott Brown headed straight for Sullivan County on Friday and defended his answer in a debate that had Democrats claiming he was unfamiliar with the geography of his new home state.
In the WMUR-TV debate Thursday, Brown and Democratic incumbent Jeanne Shaheen were asked what they’d do to improve the economy in Sullivan County.
WASHINGTON — Call it drugs for the departed: A quirky bureaucratic rule led Medicare’s prescription drug program to pay for costly medications even after the patients were dead.
That head-scratching policy is now getting a second look.
A report released Friday by the Health and Human Services Department’s inspector general said the Medicare rule allows payment for prescriptions filled up to 32 days after a patient’s death – at odds with the program’s basic principles, not to mention common sense.
“Drugs for deceased beneficiaries are clearly not medically indicated, which is a requirement for (Medicare) coverage,” the IG report said.
MIAMI — Warren M. Anderson, who headed Union Carbide Corp. when a chemical leak killed thousands of people in Bhopal, India, in 1984, has died in Florida at 92.
Anderson’s death was confirmed Friday by The Associated Press through public records. The records say Anderson died at a nursing home in Vero Beach, Florida, on Sept.
SALT LAKE CITY – A series of graffiti-like paintings on rocks in national parks across the West set off a furor on social media this month, angering people who say they desecrated some of the nation’s most famously picturesque landscapes. They’ve also created a headache for park managers who have the delicate task of cleaning up the sites without causing further damage.
It won’t be easy to get rid of the paintings, photos of which were posted on Instagram and Tumblr and then picked up by hiking blogs.
WASHINGTON — Shocked and offended by explicit questions, some U. S. servicemen and women are complaining about a new sexual-assault survey that hundreds of thousands have been asked to complete.
The survey is conducted every two years. But this year’s version, developed by the Rand Corp., is unusually detailed, including graphically personal questions on sexual acts.
Some military members say they were surprised and upset by the questions, and some even said they felt re-victimized by the blunt language.
