The Cadaver King and The Country Dentist: A True Story of Injustice in the American South By Radley Balko and Tucker Carrington (Public Affairs Books) Kennedy Brewer and Levon Brooks, who were wrongfully convicted in the 1990s of raping and murdering two 3-year-old girls in Mississippi, are at the heart of this story, but “The Cadaver King and The Country Dentist” really is about the injustices in the legal system caused by petty political fiefdoms and junk science. “Cadaver King” takes a look at how Mississippi’s criminal justice system failed when it came to death investigations and the science behind them largely because of Steven Hayne, a medical examiner, and Michael West, a dentist. (PublicAffairs) Together, they put hundreds of people behind bars, including Brewer and Brooks. Hayne performed hundreds of autopsies a year, far exceeding the numbers that are considered acceptable in professional circles.
