The shadow of the Oscar season and last weekend’s record shattering theatrical debut of Fox Searchlight’s The Grand Budapest Hotel hang over the coming weekend’s releases. Some competitors hailed its success and said they hoped to ride in its wake as they head to theaters this Friday and beyond. A24 will roll out Jake Gyllenhaal starrer Enemy by Denis Velleneuve who has had success in both the studio and indie space.
Johnathon Schaech has joined the cast of sci-fi thriller Vice. Director Brian A. Miller’s film is set on a futuristic resort where the rich can live out their darkest fantasies and the lifelike staff are actually synthetic beings. Schaech will play Chris, an adviser to resort owner Julian (Bruce Willis) who can predict usually how Julian will react and tries to stay one step ahead of him.
Showtime has promoted Emily Bergl to series regular for Season 5 of dramedy Shameless. Bergl is currently completing a 10-episode arc as Sammi Gallagher, a long-lost daughter of Frank Gallagher (William H. Macy). Shameless‘ current fourth season is pacing as its highest-rated yet, averaging 5.5 million weekly viewers across platforms, up 8% vs.
After less than a week back at the negotiating table, the WGA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and TV Producers have almost reached an agreement on a new 3-year contract. ‘Almost” being the operative word. “Last week we concluded our second round of contract talks with the AMPTP,” said Negotiating Committee Co-Chairs Chip Johannessen and Billy Ray and WGA West President Chris Keyser in a message (see below) to members today.
With the fate of low-rated Fox freshman comedy Enlisted in limbo, its star Geoff Stults has booked the main lead in CBS’ multi-camera odd couple comedy pilot Cuz-Bros, from writers David Caspe and Erik Sommers, Sony TV, CBS Studios and Fanfare. It centers on Nick (Stults), a successful, suave ladies man working as a sportscaster for a local Los Angeles TV station whose perfect life gets turned upside down when his mess of a cousin needs a place to stay.
Veteran talent agent Michael Greenwald, who had been at Don Buchwald & Associates for 18 years, departed the agency at the beginning of this week. “After many years as an agent at DBA, Michael Greenwald has now become a manager,” West Coast president Julia Buchwald said. “We wish him nothing but the best.” Greenwald, who served as VP Talent at DBA since joining in 1996, is said to be in discussions with management companies about joining.
