Houston residents biked, drove and walked to free boat rides, yoga, art talks and a fireworks display at the improved 160-acre park that stretches from Shepherd to Sabine, bordered by Allen Parkway and Memorial Drive. Mayor Annise Parker described Buffalo Bayou as her favorite Houston destination, despite it previously being "messy, weedy and difficult to manage." The renovation budget includes the $30 million gift from the Kinder Foundation, donations from other nonprofits and 850 individuals, along with tax reinvestment zone money from the city for park maintenance. With miles of hike-and-bike trails, kayak rentals and a skate park, the park's amenities could appeal to a variety of residents. The bayou's depth and natural features were an added bonus.
