American Conservatory Theater artistic director Carey Perloff will step down at the end of the company’s 2017-18 season, the theater announced Thursday. Perloff’s announcement comes as ACT is searching for a permanent executive director, with Peter Pastreich currently serving in that role in an interim capacity. The news also arrives on the heels of Berkeley Rep’s recent announcement that Tony Taccone, its own long-serving artistic director, will step down at the end of the 2018-19 season. Together, the two departures herald great change in Bay Area theater, in the shows the companies produce, the artists they commission and develop, the education and other programs they champion and the relationships they build with their cities. Among Perloff’s many accomplishments have been funding the repair of the Geary Theater after the 1989 earthquake left it in ruins; the purchase and refurbishing of a second venue, the Strand Theater; the direction of more than 50 main-stage productions; the commissioning of world premieres including “A Thousand Splendid Suns” and “Stuck Elevator”; and the expansion of ACT’s professional actor training into a three-year master of fine arts degree program. Magic Theatre artistic director Loretta Greco, who has directed four shows at ACT, said Perloff blazed a trail for female theater producers and directors. ACT board Chairwoman Nancy Livingston said by telephone that Perloff will be departing an institution that “is in good shape in every way,” with each production this year either meeting or exceeding ticket sales goals. While a search committee for Perloff’s successor is still forming, Livingston said that one ongoing issue ACT’s future artistic and executive directors will probably face is space; though the company owns the Geary and the Strand, it rents its office and classroom space.
