Author and playwright Sholem Aleichem, whose stories about Tevye the Dairyman formed the basis for the musical “Fiddler on the Roof,” lives again on his 100th yahrzeit (anniversary of his death) at this celebratory Jewish Community Center of the East Bay event presented with Artist-in-Residence Citizen Film. Citizen Film’s Sam Ball is slated to kick off an evening of film and readings with a short film celebrating Yiddish literature and Yiddish Book Center founder Aaron Lansky. Laughing in the Darkness will also screen, interspersed with participatory readings in keeping with the spirit of Aleichem’s will, in which he asked that his work be “read aloud in whatever language that you speak.”
