He was adopted by a white family at the age of four and brought to a nearly all-white community of Dietrich, Idaho, but according to his family, the racial bullying and sexual assault an African-American teenager faced from his high school football teammates didn’t occur until one particular transfer student “brought with him from Texas a culture of racial hatred” last year.
On Wednesday, the Washington Post brought to light the story of a viscous, months-long campaign of bullying, racism and ableism that allegedly culminated in a gruesome October 25, 2015 sexual assault of an unnamed teenage African-American student in the tiny town of 338:
When a teammate held out his arms after football practice in their high school locker-room, the boy thought he was about to get a hug.
Instead, he got viciously raped, authorities say.
As the teammate restrained the boy, another football player allegedly thrust a coat hanger into the boy’s rectum.

Nearly half, 47 percent, of registered American voters would consider a third-party candidate if Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump were the major party nominees, according to a new NBC/WSJ poll.
Support for third parties is steadily growing. Similar polls conducted during past presidential elections found that in 2012, 40 percent of voters would support a third-party candidate, and in 2008, 38 percent of voters would.
The 2016 presidential campaign has inspired intense backlash against the establishment.
House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi is defending the chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee, who’s been under attack from presidential candidate Bernie Sanders.
Pelosi tells reporters that DNC head Debbie Wasserman Schultz is respected by her colleagues for working hard and trying to unify the party.
Pelosi was asked if that was her personal view as well, and the California Democrat said, “That was my statement.”
Sanders’ long-shot bid for the presidential nomination against Hillary Clinton has left rifts in the party.
Sanders has accused Wasserman Schultz — who’s also a Florida congresswoman — of favoring Clinton.
Pelosi says she believes unease among Democrats largely stems from the party’s delegate selection process, which Sanders has criticized.

Beth Howland, the actress best known for her role as a ditzy waitress on the 1970s and ’80s CBS sitcom “Alice,” has died. She was 74.
Her husband, actor Charles Kimbrough, told The Associated Press that Howland died Dec. 31 of lung cancer in Santa Monica, California. He said there had been no announcement, funeral or memorial service because that’s how she wanted it.
“That was her choice,” he said.
Howland was born May 28, 1941, in Boston.
Alabama House Speaker Mike Hubbard’s business associates took the witness stand Wednesday, describing one company as deeply in debt while another collected tens-of-thousands in dollars a month in income from the politician’s consulting contracts.
Prosecutors have accused Hubbard of using his political positions to obtain $2.3 million in work and investments from his companies, by steering Republican Party campaign funds or soliciting financial favors from people with business before the Alabama Legislature.
