‘Boston Strong’ license plate solicitations under scrutiny

The Attorney General’s office is investigating a charity soliciting money for “Boston Strong” license plates before the plates have been approved by the RMV, but the charity is claiming they have the go-ahead to ask for cash.The RMV allows charities to propose new license plates that will be sold to raise money for a cause, and once a design is approved, charities collect checks for $40 from at least 750 people to pay to start production.

Officers who laid slain Yarmouth police K-9 handler Sgt. Sean Gannon to rest had one last debt to take care of Wednesday before the sun set on Cape Cod: See to it his faithful partner Nero went home, too.The lionhearted Malinois was hospitalized for nearly a week recuperating from a bullet to the face he survived when Gannon was fatally shot in the head April 12 serving a warrant in Marstons Mills.But Nero was released Wednesday night to his former trainer, retired K-9 handler Peter McClelland, to continue his bed rest and therapy for the next few weeks.

 

Weymouth mayor ‘irate,’ blasts court in ICE flap

Weymouth Mayor Robert L. Hedlund is blasting Quincy District Court for bungling the case of an Uber driver charged with rape who was here illegally and now is believed to have fled back to his native Ghana.“I’m absolutely irate,” Hedlund told the Herald. “This woman has to endure this kind of assault. The Weymouth police do a great job in investigating and arresting the alleged perpetrator. We have a situation where someone can just walk out of the country — it’s completely absurd.”

 

Injured Massachusetts police dog released from hospital

YARMOUTH  — The police dog shot when his handler was killed while serving an arrest warrant in Massachusetts has been released from a veterinary hospital.Yarmouth police say Nero was released Wednesday, the same day as Yarmouth K-9 Officer Sean Gannon's funeral.Police say the Belgian malinois was taken in Gannon's cruiser to the home of retired Yarmouth K-9 Officer Peter McClelland. McClelland stayed in the hospital by Nero's side for 144 consecutive hours.Once Nero is fully healed, he will return to Gannon's family.

 

Principal says school found empty ammo shells in bathroom

DANVERS — Police say they found more than a dozen empty ammunition shell casings inside a restroom at a Massachusetts high school.Danvers police say they found the 13 shell casings inside the boy's bathroom at the sports stadium at Essex Technical High School.The Salem News reports the casings were first discovered by school officials Wednesday afternoon after the school hosted two lacrosse games and a track meet.

 

Jawbone archway removed from Captain's historic home

EASTHAM — A strange archway built from the jawbone of a finback whale has been taken down from outside a historic home on Cape Cod.The Cape Cod Times reports a jawbone archway was removed from the Captain Edward Penniman House on the Cape Cod National Seashore this week because it is deteriorated and posed a danger to the public.Park officials say the bone was cracked and infested by insects and had become a home to nesting birds. Preservationists will determine whether the gate should be replaced with another jawbone or a man-made replica.

 

Wellesley grad recalls Barbara Bush commencement speech

WATERVILLE, Maine — Returning to her student dormitory back in 1990, Wellesley College graduate Christine Bicknell Marden received a message from Barbara Bush asking her to call the White House.It was a day before Mrs. Bush delivered a now-famous commencement address at the all-women's college in Wellesley, Massachusetts. Marden, who gave the student commencement speech, rushed to her room to call the former first lady back. The two had "a lovely 10-minute conversation that was kind of an out-of-body experience for me."

Nonprofit sets up fund for Fitchburg girl’s burial, brother’s care

FITCHBURG — A Boston nonprofit that assists abuse victims involved with the state Department of Children and Families has started a fund to pay for the burial of a horrifically beaten 6-year-old girl, whose parents are charged in connection with her death.Police found Sophia Brito badly bruised and unresponsive April 10 in the family’s Stoneybrook Road home in Fitchburg with her seriously injured 9-year-old brother, Julian. She was later pronounced dead. DCF took custody of Julian.
