The outside air is heavy as thunder rumbles, promising another afternoon storm while I gather thoughts for this column. I have been in Ithaca, New York for 10 days and the discovery of new adventures has captured my soul. The sorority girls do not move in until next week, so I have had the opportunity to get settled by unpacking and ordering new furniture for the house director suite. Shipping my antiques north was cost prohibited.

BLOUNTVILLE — The Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office is encouraging public participation in their Scorpion 5K Run & 2 Mile Walk. The event is Sunday, Sept. 8, but discounted pre-registration ends this coming Sunday.
According to an SCSO press release, proceeds from the event will purchase much-needed equipment and safety gear for the SCSO Special Weapons and Tactics team.
“As with any type of equipment or tools needed for a professional job, the SWAT team’s equipment is aging,” said Sheriff Jeff Cassidy.

It’s Greeneville, and these days that name carries plenty of weight to the high school football field.
The two-time defending Class 4A state champion will travel to take on Class 5A Daniel Boone on Friday night with kickoff set for 7:30 in Gray.
“We are excited about this matchup with one of the top programs in the state,” said Boone head coach Jeremy Jenkins.
Greeneville is 0-1 after its loss to Knox Powell, and the Trailblazers (1-0) opened with a 30-6 win over Sullivan South.
Jenkins said Greeneville brings a trench mentality to each game.

WISE – Four years ago, a helicopter drone carried a box of medical supplies from Lonesome Pine Airport to the Remote Area Medical clinic at the Wise Fairgrounds.
On Thursday, state and federal legislators joined officials of Wise County, the Virginia Department of Aviation and the company that flew that flight gathered at the airport to unveil a sign honoring the significance of that July 17, 2015 flight.

— At Macado's on Broad Street, an intoxicated man created a disturbance by activating and flashing a Taser. While being escorted out of the restaurant, the suspect became combative and pepper sprayed an employee. Police arrived to find a pair of off duty Sullivan County deputies detaining him on the sidewalk. He was jailed for disorderly conduct, assault and public intoxication.

It’s been 15 years since Skoby’s closed as a family business. And rarely a week passes that I don’t crave at least one item from Skoby’s menu. My appetite is pretty much triggered anytime I merge from John B. Dennis Bypass onto Lincoln Street, especially anytime after 4:30 p.m. That was Skoby’s opening time during the years I ate there on a regular basis.
My family and I also miss Skoby’s anytime we want to share a meal or celebrate a special occasion. We are not unique. Skoby’s was a destination for families across the region for nearly six decades.

KINGSPORT - Trula W. Miller, 97, of Kingsport went to be with the Lord on August 30, 2019.
Trula was born in Dante, Virginia on September 16, 1921 to the late William M. and Bessie May Woods Wilkerson. Trula grew up a coal miner’s daughter. She moved to Kingsport at an early age, working at the lunch counter at Russell’s Drug Store on five points. Every week, she walked to Eastman to apply for work to get better pay to help move her mom to Kingsport.
