HILTONS, VA - Gay B. Baker, 91, of Hiltons went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, August 27, 2019 at her residence surrounded by her loving family. 
The family will receive friends on Friday, August 30, 2019 from 5-7 pm at Scott County Funeral Home. A funeral service will follow with Rev. David Castle and Rev. Will Shewey officiating. Music will be provided by Oscar Harris.
A graveside service will be held at 11 am on Saturday, August 31, 2019 at Holston View Cemetery. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at Scott County Funeral Home at 10:15 am to go in procession.

 

Carl W. Newman

GATE CITY, VA - Carl W. Newman, age 99 3/4, of Gate City, VA went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, August 27, 2019, at his residence following  a period of declining health.
Graveside Services will be 12:00 noon Saturday, August 31, 2019, at Holston View Cemetery with Rev. Gordon McBride and Rev. Tony Nunley officiating.  Military honors will be provided by American Legion Hammond Post 3/265 and Virginia National Guard.  For those wishing to attend, please meet at the cemetery at 11:50 AM. A Celebration of Life service is planned at a future date.

Barbara Ann Egan Kilgore entered into rest on August 26, 2019 in Kingsport, TN at the age of 72.
A celebration of life is scheduled for Saturday, August 31, 2019 at Kendrick’s Creek United Methodist Church in Colonial Heights, TN. from 4:00-7:00 PM.

Surgoinsville Riverfront Festival to feature music, food, and hotly contested horseshoes

SURGOINSVILLE — The Surgoinsville Riverfront Festival this Friday and Saturday at Riverfront Park will feature the regular live music, food and fun activities, although the horseshoe competition is expected to be quite a bit hotter than usual.
The annual horseshoe tournament, which begins at 9 a.m. Saturday, traditionally attracts some of the region’s best pitchers.
Mayor Merrell Graham told the Times News Wednesday that a group of about 20-30 pitchers from Bean Station is expected to try to take home the trophies from the locals.

 

Papa Joe Smiddy Mountain Music Festival returns Sunday

DUFFIELD — One of Scott County’s most popular festivals is back for another year.
The 17th annual Papa Joe Smiddy Mountain Music Festival will be held Sunday, and it’s not too late to get tickets. Presented by the Cove Ridge Center Foundation, the event will feature several local bands that will showcase the rich musical heritage of the region.
When and where is the event?
The festival will take place Sunday, Sept. 1, from 3 p.m. until around 8:30.

Virgil Lee Ferrell, 75, went to his heavenly home on Aug 24, 2019 at the Grand Strand Regional Medical Center in Myrtle Beach, SC.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Naomi and Orbin Ferrell, and a brother Claude Ferrell.

PORT CLINTON, OH - Dewey Glen Matthews, 77 of Port Clinton, Ohio, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, August 28, 2019.
Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later.

Ridgeview, Burton get early start on football season

The waiting is over.
“It’s time to go. This is for real,” Ridgeview coach Rick Mullins said as his team prepares for the season-opening football contest in Southwest Virginia.
Mullins’ Wolfpack travels to Norton on Thursday to face the J.I. Burton Raiders.
Several games are on tap for Friday as prep teams throughout Southwest Virginia kick off their regular seasons.

Children unhurt during intentional crash at Kingsport gas station

KINGSPORT — At a city convenience store Tuesday, a man purposely rammed his car into a vehicle that contained an infant and two toddlers, according to police, then ricocheted into a gas pump before fleeing the scene.
There were no major injuries in the incident, in which the suspect claimed the other driver owed him money. That assertion was denied by the victim, while Charley R. Spaulding, 25, was arrested on multiple charges. They include five counts of aggravated assault and reckless endangerment.

 

Mount Carmel gets $208K settlement on wrecked fire truck

MOUNT CARMEL — Following a lengthy debate Thursday and two votes, the Board of Mayor and Aldermen agreed to accept $771 less in insurance money to keep the wrecked fire truck that rolled down an embankment in June.
The Mount Carmel Fire Department’s 2009 KME Spartan fire truck was deemed a total loss following an accident that occurred June 11 on Big Elm Road.
While responding to a vehicular accident, the driver pulled over to let an oncoming vehicle pass.
