Yesterday the Wall Street Journal reported that Google is working on a “multi-pronged effort” to build wireless networks that could connect more than a billion people in emerging markets. According to unnamed sources, the company wants to connect people outside of major cities in sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia through a combination of frequencies used for television broadcasting, special balloons or blimps transmitting on non-TV broadcast frequencies, and potentially through satellite transmissions. Making wireless speed faster in urban centers is also a potential goal for the project, the WSJ's sources said. Sources also said that Google might be looking to team up with local telecommunications companies to achieve greater wireless coverage, but it is still unclear whether any deals are on the table yet. The WSJ said that Google is talking to regulators in South Africa and Kenya to create a network through television broadcast frequencies, and that “some wireless executives say they expect such changes to happen in the coming years.” Read 3 remaining paragraphs | Comments

One of the big themes of the year has been the selloff in commodities. Gold, of course, has had a rough year. But so too have industrial commodities like copper. Whereas past commodity downturns have been closely associated with declines in risk assets, there's a sense this time of the "supercycle" coming to an end. And indeed while US equities remain within a hair of all-time highs, and inflows into stocks spike, there's been a big decrease in money going into commodity funds. This chart from Jefferies tells the story: Commodity funds continued to experience significant net outflow. The latest amount of net outflow stood at a net US$2.1bn. Recent 15 consecutive weekly outflows totalled a net US$23bn. YTD net withdrawals cumulated to U$24bn. Commodity funds saw net inflows of US$17bn for the full year in 2012. This is the fourth yearly inflow while the total amount of injections in 2012 topped the four-year period. We spent most of Saturday morning and afternoon at Comicpalooza 2013 at the George R. Brown convention center in Houston. Of particular interest to us this year was the fact that Comicpalooza was sharing floor space with Galacticon III; if there's one bunch of folks that this author couldn't pass up the chance to meet and pester for photographs, it's the cast of Battlestar Galactica. Of course, it's not all Battlestar Galactica—the show was big and featured tons of other sci-fi actors and personalities, including Danny Trejo, who is essentially badassery personified.
