Before 49ers special teams coach Thomas McGaughey gave Nate Boyer any instructions Friday, he offered his appreciation:
Boyer, a Dublin native who was one of 65 prospects at the 49ers’ local pro day Friday, is asking an NFL team to make him perhaps the most unlikely rookie in a training camp this summer.
At 34, he is older than all but three players on the 49ers’ roster and he’s spent more time in fatigues than a football uniform.
Coach Mack Brown figured Boyer could serve as an inspirational symbol — he led the Longhorns onto the field carrying the American flag — but he turned himself into an accurate long snapper:
In his quest to make the NFL, however, Boyer must overcome questions about his age, inexperience and modest size (5-foot-11, 220 pounds).
why not pursue what I love?
Boyer hopes to eventually become more involved with several nonprofit organizations serving military veterans.
A’s Sam Fuld sizzles as replacement in leadoff spot
Entering Friday, the A’s leader in slugging percentage was, would you believe, Sam Fuld — he of the small stature and the great defensive reputation.
Fuld, waived by the A’s a year ago Monday before being reacquired from the Twins for Tommy Milone later in the summer, has a .639 slugging percentage through his first nine games — putting him in the top 10 in the league.
“It’s probably the best opportunity he’s had to lead off on a consistent basis, and he’s running with it,” manager Bob Melvin said.
Fuld has five multi-hit games, and he’s tripled three times, tied for the major-league lead.
Typically, the A’s use two right-handed set-up men, and he’s trying to figure out who to will join Dan Otero.
Evan Scribner, who has spent the past three seasons bouncing between the A’s and Triple-A, is a leading candidate, largely because he has struck out eight and walked only one in his 72/3 innings so far.

To start this discussion, I had looked at Federer stats for some reason or another, and noticed that from 2005 Wimbledon to 2010 Australian Open that he missed only one grand slam final (2008 Australian Open - lost in the semifinal) - out of 19 grand slams. And he won 12 of those 18 finals.
