While much of the rhetoric in the Republican lieutenant governor race has been distinctly anti-immigrant, David Dewhurst tried to assure local Hispanics Thursday that this does not mean he bears any animosity toward Texas' Hispanic residents, whom he said represent the future of the state. Dewhurst, who is running for re-election, also said that Hispanics share many values with Republicans, a theme once prominently stressed in presidential races that has become less mentioned amid the often rancorous debate over illegal immigration.
