Soaring temperatures across the Bay Area have prompted air quality regulators to issue a Spare the Air Alert for Friday. The Bay Area Air Quality Management District is advising residents to avoid prolonged outdoor activity during the hottest parts of the day. Agency officials also are urging people to carpool or take public transportation to reduce the number of smog-producing cars on the road.
