Significant progress has been made in selection of a new Savannah-Chatham police chief, essentially leaving the next steps in the hands of the city and county managers, according to city officials. Savannah Human Resources Director Beth Robinson said she met with her county counterpart, Carolyn Smalls, Wednesday morning and together they winnowed the field of candidates to eight. The narrowing process involved reviewing the 28 responses to questionnaires that had been emailed to 32 applicants and selecting the ones that had the most tangible plans for leading the department, Robinson said.
