FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — TCU coach Gary Patterson said Trevone Boykin didn't win the competition to quarterback the Horned Frogs' new, up-tempo offense until the team's recent pre-season scrimmages. [...] Boykin left little doubt that he'll keep it with his performance in the Horned Frogs' 48-14 victory over FCS Samford in the season opener for both teams on Saturday. The multi-talented Boykin moved from quarterback to receiver in 2013, starting the opener against LSU at that position. Samford scored on a 2-yard touchdown run by Denzel Williams late in first half and a 55-yard interception return by Jamerson Blount with five minutes to play. Samford defensive coordinator Bill D'Ottavio served as head coach in the absence of Pat Sullivan, who didn't travel while recovering from neck surgery. TCU added fourth-quarter touchdowns on a 7-yard run by Trevorris Johnson and a 2-yard pass to Listenbee from backup quarterback Matt Joeckel.
