Jason Hammel will leave for the birth of his second child after Thursday’s game, so left-hander Drew Pomeranz will make a start Saturday against the Phillies. Pomeranz pitched very well in his one start in the second half, going 51/3innings and allowing three hits and an unearned run at Houston last month. Pomeranz, who has been in the bullpen since then, hasn’t pitched in a game in two weeks, but he did throw to A’s hitters Tuesday and he said it went well. Stephen Vogt was one of the hitters to face Pomeranz on Tuesday, and he also took batting practice, but he was not available to play because of a left ankle sprain. Vogt will not be available as a catcher for the rest of the season because of a right foot problem, but the hope is that he will be able to play first base or in the outfield by this weekend. Catcher Geovany Soto, though, was available after back spasms last weekend.
