Nearly three decades later, the Cap’n Crunch-inspired dish is still a popular one at his restaurant. “I’ve got this knack, if you will, of putting flavors together in my head,” Simon said Wednesday while sitting at a picnic table next to his food truck at the Oklahoma State Fair. Although he is serving that famous chicken with honey at the fair, it was his corn dogs dipped in the same crunchy, sweet batter that had people flocking Wednesday to the Diamond Dawgs truck. Known as the Wonderboy, the corn dog is served with honey mustard at both Diamond Dawgs locations in Ardmore and Norman, said Simon, 56, and it was the reason he was able to get into the fair in the first place.
