'Last Days in Vietnam’ and memories of Charles Phan

The movie is about South Vietnamese who had to flee their country when the North took over, at the end of the Vietnam War. “April 30 was the night that the North Vietnamese army took over the presidential palace,” he said. The kids were sent south on a plane, and Phan’s mother stayed behind, eventually fleeing from the army. There were so many people — 46 tables full — at the recent Chinatown Hilton benefit for the Chinese Culture Center/Foundation that the crowd overflowed the ballroom, and many people were seated at tables in the lobby. Star attraction was actress Joan Chen, who served as emcee and presided over the drawing of raffle tickets. The event honored Dennis Wu, whose new project is tutoring kids in tech and finance; Thomas Klitgaard, founding director of the SF-Shanghai Sister City Committee; and jewelry maker Pat Tseng. Steven Short of KALW’s “Crosscurrents,” says he received an announcement of a Meetup group, “Bay Area Rock Concerts for People 50 and Up.” [...] before we saw “Old Hats” Thursday night at ACT, we were downstairs for the permanent naming of Nancy’s Bar, in honor of Nancy Livingston, chairwoman of the ACT board and a “fierce little woman,” in the words of Artistic Director Carey Perloff.
