Seattle Fire Chief Gregory Dean will retire at the end of the year after a 44-year, up-through-the-ranks career that began in 1970. Dean has served for a decade as chief, under three mayors, and was asked by newly elected Mayor Ed Murray to stay on for at least a full year. Murray was faced with selection of a new Seattle police chief, arguably the most important appointment a mayor will make.
