The first sign that Richard Nixon had sealed the fate of his presidency came when a wire service machine in one corner of an empty Seattle Post-Intelligencer newsroom went nuts, with bells ringing and copy piling up as it churned out. It was Nixon’s “Saturday Night Massacre” of Oct. 20, 1973.
