Nixon’s “Saturday Night Massacre”: A rookie reporter remembers

Richard Nixon:  The 37th President sealed his fate 41 years ago, on October 20, 1973, with his “Saturday Night Massacre.”  The firing of Watergate Special Prosecutor Archibald Cox, and Attorney General Elliot Richardson’s resignation, triggered a firestorm . . . and an impeachment investigation. The first sign that Richard Nixon had sealed the fate of his Presidency came when a wire service machine in one corner of an empty Seattle Post-Intelligencer news room went nuts, with bells ringing and copy piling up as it churned out.
