Emily Kane is a captain in the Albuquerque Fire Department, but this campaign season has the first-term state lawmaker fighting blazes of a different sort. Kane, a Democrat, faces a strong challenge in Albuquerque’s House District 15 from Republican newcomer Sarah Maestas Barnes. It’s one of the key races in the GOP’s effort to wrest control of the House from Democrats, who outnumber Republicans 37-33. Maestas Barnes is a lawyer and owner with her husband of an engineering firm.
