Andre Landry Jr., former director of the Sea Turtle & Fisheries Ecology Research Laboratory at Texas A&M University at Galveston, helped organize the first symposium in Galveston in 1985 at a time when the Kemp's ridley was at the edge of extinction and efforts to protect the main nesting grounds in Mexico seemed to make little difference.
