(AP) — At age 93, Dr. Lowell Gess doesn't show a bit of hesitation about his upcoming journey to Africa, where the retired ophthalmologist from of Alexandria plans to do whatever he can to help combat the Ebola outbreak — despite federal warnings against non-essential travel to the county. While Gess was working at an eye hospital in Freetown during the 1990s, he witnessed Sierra Leone's bloody civil war. [...] he will bring about $100,000 in eye medicines and equipment to the country, and then help repair equipment and provide moral support during his stay. [...] he hopes to bring some comfort to the people he loves in the country that's become his second home.
