Hybrid, electric vehicle owners object to DOT budget proposal

Part of the Wisconsin state government's plan to up fees and taxes in order to help fund transportation projects is meeting opposition from people who sell and own hybrid cars. As the number of those vehicles increase on Wisconsin roads and gas efficiency goes up, those drivers pay less in per-gallon taxes. The state is proposing a two-year budget plan that would up taxes and fees by $750 million, compensating for shaky tax revenue and uncertainty over federal highway dollars.
