'Food Chains’ review: How workers suffer so we can pay less

Rather than vilify cash-strapped farmers, the documentary places much of the blame on giant supermarkets, which compel farmers to sell their produce at lower prices and thus pay unfair wages to their workers. Much of the action centers on the Coalition of Immokalee Workers in Florida, a group of tomato pickers conducting a hunger strike against the popular Publix supermarket chain. The coalition’s request is simple but ingenious: that giant retailers pay just a penny more a pound for tomatoes and refuse to do business with growers who exploit workers with low wages and terrible working conditions. [...] many retailers (who are making zillions in profits) don’t quite see it that way. The film features footage from Edward R.
