Raiders beat: Sticking with run pays dividends

Oakland had three straight three-and-outs, gaining 11 yards on nine plays. On the Raiders’ first drive of the third quarter, Murray had consecutive runs of 25, 4 and 17 yards in what became another Sebastian Janikowski field-goal drive. The coaches regret not turning to Murray earlier when Darren McFadden and Maurice Jones-Drew were struggling, but as Murray will tell you, sometimes players just look better, faster and harder to tackle in games than in practice. Olson has praised Thompkins’ speed since he was claimed off waivers from the Patriots, and has been looking for someone to take the top off the defense. Though most players were talking about interim coach Tony Sparano and the job he has done, safety Charles Woodson tied his fate to a different coach. Assistant defensive backs coach Marcus Robertson has been a big help to me this year. Woodson picked off a Kyle Orton pass in the first quarter for his 60th career interception and 22nd as a Raider, tying him with Warren Powers for 10th on the team’s all-time list. Punter Marquette King set a franchise record with his 100th punt of the season.

    The Rockies found misery again in their first extra-inning game of the season. Philadelphia walked off Colorado, 2-1, in the series opener at Citizens Bank Park on Monday night, dropping the Rockies to 4-13 on the year. The Rockies couldn’t solve ace Aaron Nola, and then came up short in a pair of opportunities to score in the ninth and 10th innings before Cristian Pache’s single lifted Philadelphia to the victory. “Whoever came out on the short end of this one, it was going to be a tough one,” Rockies manager Bud Black told reporters.

    The transfer portal for college football is about to get very busy for Colorado and other teams around the country. On Monday morning, On3Sports reported that CU defensive lineman Chazz Wallace plans to enter the transfer portal, the first CU player to leave for the portal this spring. It didn’t take long for him to have company. Also on Monday, On3Sports reported that safety Jaden Milliner-Jones and offensive linemen Isaiah Jatta and Savion Washington also plan to enter the transfer portal.
