Two shredding events planned for Saturday

Houstonians have two opportunities Saturday to shred sensitive paperwork and help protect themselves against identity theft. Identity theft is all too common, and the bad guys will dumpster dive to steal personal information, said Denise Owens, vice president and manager of the Texas investigations group at Comerica. Iron Mountain, a storage and information management company, will be in the parking lot to take paperwork from your trunk, back seat, etc. The Sheriff's Office said Houstonians may bring up to five regular size 'banker' boxes per vehicle, and deputies will take these boxes from your vehicle. Christina Garza, media relations manager for the Harris County Sheriff's Office, said identity theft happens many different ways, and shredding documents is one way to protect yourself. Tax time also sees bogus tax returns, where identity thieves file taxes in your name and take your refund.
