For Downs, who grew up splitting her time between Oaxaca and Minneapolis with her Scottish-American father and Mixtec Indian mother, the spirits of both sides of the border are ingrained in her music, which is inspired by everything from Mexican folk to indigenous culture and contemporary rhythms.
