Best place to spot whales from the shore

The family-friendly Natural Bridges State Beach is best known for the clouds of migrating monarch butterflies that arrive every winter and take up residence in the park’s eucalyptus grove. The freestanding arch, once connected to land and strong enough to support the weight of automobiles, now serves as a roosting spot for hundreds of floppy brown pelicans. Natural Bridges offers a cornucopia of wildlife viewing opportunities, including tide pools at the north end of the beach, sea otters and seals lounging in the waves, and a cormorant rookery on the cliffs near the park’s West Cliff Drive entrance. The spring migration, which runs through May, features Mexican-born gray whale babies heading north for their first visit to the feeding grounds off Alaskan shores. Natural Bridges offers picnic tables, barbecue grills, an interpretive center and park store — but no campsites. Pay to park near the bathrooms and picnic tables, or find a street spot on Swanton Boulevard or near the park’s back entrance on Delaware Avenue and walk in.
