State Sen. Rodney Ellis, D-Houston, called on shoppers not only to take advantage of savings during this year's back-to-school tax-free weekend, but also to press legislators to amend and expand the event. Ellis, the author of the original bill that passed the Texas Legislature in 1999, said the back-to-school sales tax holiday is a critical weekend that provides incentives for additional shopping and retail revenue but also helps groups hit hardest by the state's sales tax. In Texas, the state sales tax is 6.25 percent, though local jurisdictions have the ability to add marginal amounts to that rate.
