Oklahoma City Council approves construction of first MAPS 3 senior health and wellness center

William CrumWork will begin soon on the first MAPS 3 senior health and wellness center. The Oklahoma City Council voted Tuesday to begin construction, approving a $9.2 million contract to build the long-awaited center. The project is about two years behind schedule, largely a result of setbacks in finding a community partner to run the center. A nonprofit, Healthy Living & Fitness Inc., was formed to operate the center near NW 115 Street and Rockwell Avenue, on land purchased from Putnam City Baptist Church. Healthy Living’s center will feature a warm water pool for low-impact exercise, a gymnasium and walking track, and space for social activities. The second MAPS 3 senior health and wellness center will be built beginning soon near Capitol Hill High School. Both centers should open at about the same time, in late 2016. Plans to construct the Healthy Living center include shifting $599,333 from contingency funds to finance upgrades intended to hold down maintenance costs and reduce energy bills.
