Luther Campbell, the civic and political activist who jolted the establishment status quo decades ago with his raunchy lyrics, has a new way to shake things up: challenging a sitting Florida congresswoman in a Democratic primary.
Publicly, Campbell hasn’t decided. But he’s been teasing a candidacy — sometimes in unorthodox ways even by current-day routines of celebrity politicians — in a way that makes it sound as if he’s going to run.
“I’m still on this fact-finding mission to figure out whether or not I’m gonna run for Congress,” Campbell said in a social media video posted on April 9, adding, “It’s gonna be very hard for me not to run.
Bob Graham and Broward County had a close but complicated relationship.
At election time, Broward voters loved “Chipmunk Cheeks,” as he was affectionately called, and they showed it, producing overwhelming margins in both of his victories for governor in 1978 and 1982.
“Just a nice person,” recalled R. Emmett McTigue, a Fort Lauderdale real estate broker who knew Graham for decades.
Q: Never doubt a sleeping giant. The Heat have spotted the Celtics one Jimmy Butler and still are about to create havoc. Loved Friday night and gonna love this, too, Ira. – Dan.
A: Hey, have yourself a night, as you did Friday. And who’s to argue about the thoroughness of what the Heat accomplished against the Bulls, even in the absences of Jimmy Butler and Terry Rozier.
“Integrity, honesty, decency, compassion” were the Sun Sentinel’s front-page words honoring Bob Graham, Florida’s former governor and senator. I doubt that those words will ever be associated with Gov. Ron DeSantis, especially after he signed House Bill 433 and Senate Bill 1264.
Perhaps DeSantis should follow Graham’s practice of “workdays” and see what it’s like to work outdoors in the Florida sun.
