New app uses smartphones to help predict earthquakes

Scientists at the University of California, Berkeley just released a free Android app that uses smartphone accelerometers to detect earthquakes — and it could potentially warn users of upcoming seismic activity. The app, called MyShake, is available on the Google Play store and runs on minimal power in the background, so users will hardly even know it’s there.
