Sanders campaign: CBS and ABC offered charitable donations to host debate

CBS and ABC are the two TV networks that offered to make charitable donations in exchange for hosting a debate between Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders, Sanders campaign spokesperson Michael Briggs told POLITICO, though CBS denied they offered a donation. Trump, who backed out of the debate on Friday, originally told ABC's Jimmy Kimmel that he would participate if a network would donate about $10 million to charity. On Friday, minutes before Trump announced he would not participate in the debate, the Sanders campaign announced that two broadcast networks had offered to host it and that both offers included "a major contribution to charity."An ABC spokesperson said the network had offered to donate "any profits to charities of their choice" but that no specific dollar amount had been pledged.A CBS spokesperson said in an email they had expressed interest in the debate and discussed a venue, but do not pay for appearances and made no commitments regarding charitable contributions. It's far from the first time Trump has tried to get money out of the networks in exchange for appearing at a debate.
