The head of Hawaiian Electric Co., the state’s largest utility, had some choice words aimed at some in the solar photovoltaic industry, a sector that was once one of the fastest-growing industries in the state but has slowed since the ending of net energy metering. Net metering, which allowed residential customers to sell excess electricity to the utility at retail prices, largely fueled the record amounts of this type of renewable energy installed in the state.
