A’s Sonny Gray (mostly) dominates Texas, as usual

[...] Gray’s lousy 2016 season briefly bumped up against his career domination at Arlington and he had a near-disastrous fifth inning before settling back down and helping Oakland beat first-place Texas 5-3. The A’s are 8-4 since the All-Star break, tied with the Yankees for the best mark in the league, and while they’re 12 games behind the Rangers, they’ve gained five games in the standings in the past month. In the fifth, though, Rougned Odor rapped the Rangers’ first hit - and still, it appeared as if Gray’s mojo at Texas would prevail, because Odor was thrown out trying to stretch his single into a double. Robinson Chirinos narrowly missed hitting a homer down the third-base line, foul by a dozen feet, but he doubled and Jurickson Profar walked before Gray got groundouts from Nomar Mazara and Ian Desmond to end the inning. An All-Star who finished third in the Cy Young voting last season, he’s considered one of the best young pitchers in the game. Lifetime at Arlington entering the day: 5-0 with an 0.96 ERA, the lowest ERA ever at the Rangers’ ballpark by a starter with a minimum of 15 innings worked. Crisp, back in the lineup after missing two games with neck stiffness, added an RBI double off pitcher Sam Dyson’s foot in the ninth.
