The Portland Winterhawks opened the Western Hockey League season with a 7-3 victory over the Seattle Thunderbirds on Saturday at the Moda Center in front of 8,705 fans. It marked the first victory for Mike Johnson in his return as coach of the Winterhawks. Portland’s seven goals were scored by seven different players.
