Fans bask in sun during first day of Hardly Strictly Bluegrass

The sounds of banjos and pedal steel guitars filled the heart of Golden Gate Park on Friday afternoon as the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival kicked off under sunny skies and cool breezes. The annual, free three-day show, one of the country’s biggest live music events, is expected to draw crowds of up to 500,000 people over the weekend with an eclectic lineup that includes Jackson Browne, Steve Earle and the Dukes, Cyndi Lauper, Emmylou Harris and more than 100 other acts performing across seven stages. Fans — including nearby San Francisco Unified School District students — trickled into the park early on opening day to catch sets by the young Southern rock duo Jamestown Revival, country veterans Bill Kirchen and Austin de Lone, and the North Carolina folk and blues sextet Delta Rae. Go to Page E1 for Datebook’s story on South Bay musician Aki Kumar, who brings his bluesy Bollywood tunes to Hardly Strictly Bluegrass this weekend.
