DIA embraces aliens, conspiracy theories with “Close Encounters” screening

Once again, Denver International Airport is betting that a mix of travelers and curious film lovers will show up to watch a free movie on its new open-air plaza — attracted in part by the airport’s rich trove of conspiracy theories. The airport on Oct. 20 will screen Stephen Spielberg’s 1977 sci-fi classic “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” for free, along with a “conspiracy-themed costume party” as part of its Film on the Fly series. “Even this Steven Spielberg classic has managed to make its way into the conspiracy lore of the airport, with some people claiming the coordinates provided by the aliens point to Denver International Airport,” said Stacey Stegman, senior vice president of communications, customer service and marketing, in a press statement. “While the coordinates actually lead to a field far north of the airport, we are still having fun with this theory and closing out our ‘Conspiracy Month’ of events with a free screening of this timeless sci-fi movie.” Theories about the airport range from the supposedly swastika-shaped runways and not-so-hidden secret-society markers to underground bunkers and a distinct New World Order influence. Attendees are encouraged to show up in conspiracy-themed costumes, albeit with “no full masks or weapons, real or not, please.
